A significant pavement improvement project on the New York State Thruway in Orange County has been completed, as announced by Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday (October 20). The $36.6 million project focused on a stretch of the Thruway between Exit 16 in Woodbury and Exit 17 in Newburgh, spanning 48 lane miles. This section of the highway is used by approximately 53,000 motorists daily.

The project involved both full and partial repairs, including the removal and replacement of deteriorated pavement sections down to the subbase. Additionally, a new two-inch asphalt overlay was applied to improve the driving experience. Safety enhancements included new guiderails, joint repairs, and upgrades to drainage and culverts, along with reflective line striping for better visibility.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "Repaving the Thruway and keeping the road smooth for drivers is a critical investment given the important role the 570-mile superhighway serves in our transportation network and our state’s economy." Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus also highlighted the significance of the improvements, noting that maintaining safe and reliable roadways is essential for supporting residents, visitors, and the local economy.

The project, which began last year, was conducted in both directions and was completed by Crisdel Group, Inc., a contractor based in South Plainfield, New Jersey. Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey remarked, "The completion of this Thruway project represents a commitment to improving the everyday travel experience for residents, visitors, and businesses alike."
