Newburgh City Fire Chief F.J. Spinelli was abruptly terminated on Tuesday (October 21) by City Manager Todd Venning, just one day before his planned retirement. Spinelli's dismissal followed his public criticism of the city administration's refusal to seek a new waiver that would have allowed him to continue in his role for another year. The waiver was necessary for Spinelli to receive a full salary in Newburgh while collecting a pension from his previous position.

Marquis Taylor, President of Firefighters’ Local 589, expressed strong disapproval of the city manager's actions. Taylor stated, "They decided not to do a waiver because Spinelli spoke out in favor of us and against Todd’s budget." He further criticized Venning, describing him as an "autocrat" who disregards the needs and requests of department heads.

The city had previously secured a waiver for Spinelli, but this time only sought an extension through the end of October. Officials claimed they could not appeal the state's decision, leading to Spinelli's termination. The move has sparked controversy and criticism from the firefighters' union, highlighting tensions between the city's administration and its fire department.
