Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano announced on Monday (October 27) that the city will re-allocate $10,000 in federal funds to provide emergency relief for families relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This initiative aims to support approximately 200 Middletown families facing potential SNAP benefit cuts on November 1.
The city plans to distribute $50 gift cards through a local supermarket to eligible families. If more than 200 families apply, the distribution will be determined by a lottery system. Mayor DeStefano emphasized the importance of this program, stating, "We all know what the problem is, so we are trying to be part of the solution." He highlighted the necessity of government intervention during uncertain times and encouraged local businesses and residents to donate to support families in need.
The program is limited to Middletown residents, and the city will post clear eligibility and distribution guidelines to ensure a fair process. DeStefano expressed concern over the "very real fear" families face about providing food in the coming weeks and stressed the city's responsibility to address this issue.
The mayor's announcement comes amid concerns about the future of federal SNAP benefits and reflects Middletown's commitment to supporting its residents during challenging times. For more details, visit the Mid Hudson News.
