Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino has launched a safety initiative to protect county workers following a recent daytime murder on Garden Street in Poughkeepsie. The incident raised safety concerns among employees, particularly those who park at the city-owned Financial Parking Deck. Concerns have been voiced about rampant narcotics use, car break-ins, and panhandlers in the area.
In response, Serino partnered with Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk Imperati to increase patrols, supplementing the City of Poughkeepsie police department. "Employee safety is a top priority for me," Serino told Mid-Hudson News. Deputies now have a visible presence during morning and evening commuter hours, actively engaging individuals attempting to use narcotics in the parking deck.
Since the increased patrols began, employees like Lisa Elster have reported feeling safer, with a noticeable decrease in drug-related activity. Elster mentioned, "I was dreading parking here as it gets darker earlier, but I feel safer with the sheriff driving through here."
This initiative is part of Serino's broader focus on public safety, as highlighted in her 2025 Executive Budget proposal. The budget emphasizes investments in public safety, youth services, and support for seniors, veterans, and families, while maintaining a low property tax rate. The budget plan also includes a Community Benefit Fund, allocating $2.6 million for law enforcement and emergency services.
