The construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of State Route 376 and Hooker Avenue in Poughkeepsie is now complete. The $11.4 million project, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, aims to improve traffic flow and safety. The single-lane roundabout features native landscaping and new pedestrian accommodations, enhancing access to Vassar College and the Arlington business district.
Governor Hochul emphasized the project's role in promoting a safer and more efficient transportation system. The roundabout is designed to reduce conflict points for drivers and pedestrians, cutting congestion and commute times. It also eliminates the need for traffic signals, which helps in reducing energy consumption.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) collaborated with Vassar College and local stakeholders to ensure the project met community needs. The project is part of NYSDOT’s "Complete Streets" initiative, which focuses on creating sustainable and accessible transportation systems.
State Senator Robert Rolison praised the project, stating, "This new roundabout not only makes these busy roads safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians but has improved travel across Dutchess County." The construction, led by Argenio Brothers, included planting 59 native trees and over 600 perennial plants to blend with the local environment.
The roundabout is expected to significantly improve traffic conditions and safety in the area, providing better access for all road users. The project is a testament to the state's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
