The City of Newburgh is providing $150 grocery vouchers to residents affected by cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The initiative, launched on Wednesday (November 5), aims to support approximately 700 households facing food insecurity due to disruptions in their SNAP benefits. Newburgh redirected $100,000 from its federal Community Development Block Grant to fund this emergency aid program.

Eligible residents must be SNAP recipients and provide proof of residency in Newburgh. The vouchers are being distributed through door-to-door outreach, walk-in community sites, and partnerships with local organizations. Priority is given to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families with children, as reported by the City of Newburgh.

The distribution comes in response to a recent ruling by a federal judge in Rhode Island, who ordered the Trump administration to fully cover SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans. As reported by the Times Herald-Record, the administration announced it would provide up to 65% of the monthly benefits in November.

Residents who miss the initial distribution can still pick up their vouchers at 123 Grand Street. The program will continue through November 14, excluding Veterans Day. Local organizations and individuals interested in supporting the city's emergency food aid efforts can contact the City Manager's Office.
