A man was fatally shot by security at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh on Thursday night (November 13) after allegedly attacking a security guard with a knife. The incident occurred around 11:07 p.m. when Carlos Ortiz, 45, pulled a fire alarm in the hospital's emergency room lobby, prompting a response from security staff. According to the City of Newburgh Police Department, Ortiz became disorderly and attacked a security guard with a knife. In response, an armed security officer fired a single round, incapacitating Ortiz, who was later pronounced dead.
A woman nearby sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the altercation. The incident is currently under investigation by the City of Newburgh Detective Division and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force. No charges have been filed at this time.
