The Catskill Mountain Railroad in Kingston is kicking off its annual Polar Express rides today (November 14). These festive train rides will run through December 30, offering passengers a magical journey reminiscent of the beloved holiday movie and book, 'The Polar Express' by Chris Van Allsburg.
Passengers will board a vintage 1950s coach for a fictional trip to the North Pole, where they will be treated to hot chocolate and cookies served by dancing chefs. During the ride, guests can enjoy a read-along of the classic story and partake in caroling and other holiday activities led by characters on board. Upon reaching the North Pole, Santa and his elves will join the train, giving each guest a silver sleigh bell, the first gift of Christmas, as described in the story.
The entire experience lasts about an hour and a half, with the train ride itself taking just over an hour. Passengers are encouraged to arrive 45 minutes before departure to check in at the Westbrook Station Ticket Office. Boarding begins 20 minutes before the train's scheduled departure.
According to the Catskill Mountain Railroad, seating is assigned during the online ticket purchase process, and special accommodations are available for those with mobility or sensory issues. Tickets can be purchased online, and Ulster County and Kingston residents can receive a $10 discount by providing proof of residency.
As reported by News10, this event is a family-friendly experience with no alcohol allowed on board. The Catskill Mountain Railroad, a for-profit organization run by volunteers, has been operating since 1982 and relies on ticket sales and volunteer efforts to maintain and improve the railroad corridor.
