In Kingston, New York, the murder trial of former State Trooper Christopher Baldner may see the end of testimony today. Baldner is accused of causing the death of 11-year-old Monica Goods during a high-speed chase in 2020. On Thursday (November 13), jurors heard from Tristina Goods, Monica's sister, who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The prosecution argues that Baldner's actions showed "depraved indifference to human life" when he allegedly rammed the family's SUV twice at speeds nearing 130 miles per hour. Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Gashi described Baldner's actions as a "fatal abuse of power." The defense, however, claims that Tristin Goods, the driver, caused the collision by suddenly slowing down.

A collision reconstruction expert testified that Baldner hit his brakes and steered sharply just before the second impact, which caused the SUV to lose control and flip over, killing Monica Goods. The expert stated that Baldner made no effort to avoid the collision, as reported by the Daily Freeman. Defense attorney Stephen Coffey challenged the expert's credibility, questioning the accuracy of his findings.

Baldner, who retired in 2022, faces charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment. If convicted, he could face decades in prison. It remains uncertain if Baldner will testify in his defense. The trial continues as the court anticipates further developments in the case.
