Columbia County is expanding its home-delivered meals program for seniors, thanks to $400,000 in funding from New York State. The Columbia County Office for the Aging will use $110,000 of these funds to provide an additional 70 to 100 grab-and-go meals for residents aged 60 and older. This expansion comes in response to recent cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The program began on November 3 and offers meals on weekdays at senior centers throughout the county. According to Nina Benvenuto, director of the Columbia County Office for the Aging, the decision to expand was based on the number of calls received for meal pickups. "We found 70 to 100 meals was the sweet spot that meets the need but also doesn’t really put an extra amount of strain on our kitchen," Benvenuto said.
The grab-and-go meals, which include a sandwich, milk, and a small dessert, can be picked up at designated locations such as the Copake Town Hall and Copake Rec Center. Meals must be reserved 24 hours in advance by calling the Philmont Nutrition Site at 518-672-7134. The program aims to support those who may not feel comfortable relying on government food assistance, including veterans.
The remaining $290,000 from the grant will support the Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood to offset SNAP and Home Energy Assistance Program benefits for county residents over 60. This initiative highlights the county's commitment to addressing the needs of its aging population.
