The City of Kingston is preparing to unveil its Food Systems Plan, aimed at strengthening the local food system and improving food security. The plan will be presented to the public on Wednesday, December 3, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. This initiative, developed by Kingston's Department of Health and Wellness in collaboration with Food Systems Foresight, seeks to enhance access to nutritious food for all residents through collaborative efforts with community partners.
Mayor Steven T. Noble expressed enthusiasm for the plan, highlighting its potential to guide the city in taking meaningful and sustainable actions. The plan will serve as a blueprint for supporting a resilient local food system, which is vital for community sustainability, viability, and equity. The Food Systems Plan encompasses all activities and resources involved in getting food from farm to fork.
The unveiling event will feature presentations by Kristin Kessler, Director of Community Health for Ulster County, and Angela Hansen from Food Systems Foresight. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. For those unable to attend, a public comment period will remain open until January 7, 2026, allowing residents to submit their thoughts online.
The project has received partial funding from an American Rescue Plan Act grant, and the city hopes to incorporate feedback from the community to refine and implement the plan effectively. The meeting will offer on-site child entertainment, live Spanish interpretation, and refreshments to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all attendees.
