The Poughkeepsie Police Department has launched a crackdown on double-parking, which has been causing significant traffic congestion in the area. This enforcement effort aims to alleviate traffic jams and improve road safety in the town. According to Mid Hudson News, the initiative comes in response to a noticeable increase in double and even triple-parking incidents following the end of the pandemic.
The Traffic Enforcement Division, led by Support Services Captain Michael O'Dowd, is spearheading this campaign. The division is responsible for reducing motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents through education and enforcement of traffic laws. The division uses a computer database to track auto accidents and deploys officers to problem areas based on these statistics. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department emphasizes that the most common traffic complaints include speeding and failure to stop at stop signs, but double-parking has become a priority due to its impact on traffic flow.
Officers are actively monitoring areas prone to double-parking and issuing summonses to violators. The police department hopes that these efforts will lead to safer and more efficient travel for residents and visitors alike. The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to ensure compliance with the Vehicle and Traffic laws of New York State and the Town of Poughkeepsie.
