In a heartfelt ceremony, a portion of Route 208 in Maybrook has been designated the Jack Barletta Memorial Highway to honor the late World War II veteran. State and local officials, along with residents and Barletta's family, gathered on Wednesday (November 19) to commemorate his legacy.

Jack Barletta, a longtime resident of Maybrook, served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was wounded in Italy and France. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service. State Senator James Skoufis highlighted Barletta's dedication, stating, "This man set out at the age of 19 to face a future he couldn’t have begun to fathom."

Beyond his military service, Barletta contributed significantly to his community. In 1970, as a commander with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), he helped secure funding to build a VFW meeting hall by using personal collateral. His dedication extended to 25 years with the Maybrook Engine Company #1 and serving as a part-time officer in Maybrook and the Town of Montgomery.

Assemblyman Brian Maher recalled Barletta's participation in the first Hudson Valley Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2012, describing it as a memorable day for all involved. Barletta's daughter, Donna, expressed gratitude for the highway dedication, noting her father's pride in his community and military service.

Jack Barletta passed away in 2014, but his legacy continues to inspire those in the Hudson Valley. The highway designation serves as a lasting tribute to his contributions to both his country and community.
