Michele Frazier, a Democrat from Delhi, has announced her candidacy for the New York State Senate in the 2026 election. Frazier previously ran against Republican Peter Oberacker for the 51st State Senate seat but was unsuccessful, losing by a margin of 59.3 percent to 40.6 percent. Despite the loss, Frazier remains committed to representing the people of rural New York.

Frazier's decision to run again comes as Senator Peter Oberacker has decided not to seek reelection. Instead, Oberacker plans to challenge Congressman Josh Riley for his position in the 19th Congressional District. The district covers a wide area, including the Catskills, Hudson Valley, greater Capital District, Southern Tier, and Finger Lakes regions.

Frazier, who has experience as an Oneonta city councilwoman, is also a local realtor and college political science teacher. She emphasizes the need for representatives who prioritize the needs of everyday people over political ambitions. "The people of rural New York deserve better than career politicians chasing titles and favors," Frazier stated.

The 51st Senate District includes parts of Ulster and Delaware counties. As the election approaches, Frazier aims to connect with voters and address their concerns, advocating for a more people-focused approach in the state government.
