The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) is working to reschedule a meeting that was postponed due to weather. The meeting was intended to discuss the future of the bridge replacement project on State Route 23A over Kaaterskill Creek in Catskill, New York. Originally planned for Tuesday (December 2) at Catskill Central School, the meeting will be rescheduled to a later date.
The project aims to replace the existing masonry arch bridge, built in the 1800s and widened in 1927, with a new steel and concrete structure. The new bridge will span 105 feet, enhancing water flow and reducing construction impacts on the creek. It will feature two 11-foot travel lanes and six-foot-wide shoulders to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
Construction is expected to conclude in 2027, necessitating a full closure of Route 23A in the project area. Detours will be established on Routes 32, 23, and 9W. The DOT encourages community members to attend the rescheduled meeting to provide input on the project, including potential impacts on traffic detours and emergency response routes.
Catskill Town Supervisor Patrick McCulloch has emphasized the importance of public participation, particularly concerning emergency services. "We want to get as many people to this as possible," McCulloch said. The DOT has assured that concerns regarding emergency services will be addressed during the meeting.
