The New York State Department of Health has reported that the flu is now prevalent across the Mid Hudson Valley, despite the flu season only beginning a few weeks ago. According to the department, there have already been 17,000 positive flu cases reported across 62 counties. Among the local counties, Westchester County recorded the highest number of cases with 580, followed by Orange County with 294, and Rockland County with 179 during the week ending November 22.
The Rockland County Department of Health is urging residents to get vaccinated against the flu, especially during National Influenza Vaccination Week, which takes place from December 6 to 12. Dr. Mary Leahy, the Rockland County Commissioner of Health, emphasized the importance of vaccinations, stating, "Getting your annual vaccinations can reduce the risk of illness, hospitalization, or death." She highlighted that young children, pregnant individuals, adults 65 or older, and those with chronic health conditions are at a higher risk of severe complications from the flu and other respiratory illnesses.
Vaccines for the flu, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) are available at many pharmacies and healthcare providers. It typically takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to build sufficient immunity. Dr. Leahy also recommends practicing good health habits, such as avoiding close contact with sick individuals, staying home when ill, and maintaining proper hygiene.
