Ulster County is set to begin installing new bus shelters for the Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) system. The project, which has received support from two committees of the Ulster County Legislature, will involve a $500,000 capital investment to purchase and install the shelters.

Deputy County Executive Amanda LaValle presented the plan to the Public Works and Capital Projects Committee, explaining that the funding will allow the county to start building shelters in high-traffic areas, including a larger shelter at Development Court. This location has seen an increase in passengers waiting for buses. The county plans to engage with municipalities to identify other high-need locations for shelters by the first quarter of 2026.

Legislator Kathy Nolan, chair of the Public Works Committee, suggested exploring the option of mobile shelters that could be relocated based on demand. The Housing and Transportation Committee had already approved the plan earlier this month.

The initiative aims to improve the public transit experience for residents by providing more comfortable and convenient waiting areas for bus passengers.
