The New York State Department of Health is urging residents to protect themselves against respiratory illnesses as flu cases surge across the Hudson Valley. The latest data reveals that Westchester County has the highest number of flu infections with 1,101 cases, followed by Orange County with 512, and Rockland County with 296. Vaccines for flu and COVID-19 are readily available at pharmacies and doctor's offices.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized the importance of vaccinations, stating, "We expect a more severe flu season due to circulating strains of the virus compared to last year." He encouraged New Yorkers to get vaccinated to safeguard themselves and their loved ones during holiday gatherings. According to the New York State Department of Health, flu cases have increased by 80% in the past week, with hospitalizations rising by 93% as reported by the Department.
The Department has also launched a new Respiratory Surveillance Report to provide a comprehensive view of respiratory illness trends statewide. Despite the availability of vaccines, there has been a decrease in flu vaccinations compared to last year, with 3.4 million flu vaccines reported statewide, a 5.3% decrease from the previous year according to health officials.
Health officials stress that the flu vaccine remains the best defense against infection and can reduce the risk of severe illness. In addition to flu, COVID-19 cases continue to pose a significant health risk. The Department has extended an executive order allowing pharmacists to administer COVID vaccines to ensure timely access for all New Yorkers as reported by NY1.
