Voters in the Onteora Central School District are heading to the polls today (Wednesday, December 10) to decide on two key propositions aimed at improving the district's central campus in Boiceville. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the high school on State Route 28.
The first proposition, totaling $26.9 million, proposes creating a district-wide K-5 elementary school at Bennett Elementary. This includes adding classrooms, updating instructional spaces, and enhancing infrastructure. If passed, Bennett would house grades K-5, while the middle school would accommodate grades 6-8, and the high school would serve grades 9-12. If it fails, Bennett will remain K-4, and fifth grade will move to the middle school.
The second proposition, worth $15 million, focuses on K-12 renovations and infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to windows, ceilings, lighting, and recreational facilities. According to Daily Freeman, the funding for these projects is expected to come from savings generated by closing Woodstock Elementary School by 2028.
Despite the vote, district officials have stated that the plan to consolidate into a single campus will proceed regardless of the outcome. The decision to close Woodstock Elementary has faced opposition, with some community members arguing it will change the hamlet's character and appeal. However, Superintendent Victoria McLaren emphasized that the consolidation is necessary due to declining enrollment and financial pressures.
The propositions follow a previously rejected $70.5 million plan. The revised proposals aim to address public concerns by reducing costs and separating the projects into two distinct votes. Voting is available in-person at the high school, and early mail ballots are also an option for residents.
