An elderly couple from Elizaville, New York, died in a tragic accident on the New York State Thruway on Tuesday (December 9). The crash occurred around 2 p.m. in Rosendale when the couple's 2007 Nissan attempted a U-turn and was struck by a 2023 Kia traveling northbound. The impact caused the Nissan to roll over several times, while the Kia veered off and hit a guide rail.

According to Mid-Hudson News, Esther Oliveras, 81, died at the scene, and her husband, Guillermo Oliveras, 84, succumbed to his injuries at Westchester Medical Center. The driver of the Kia, 21-year-old Amiah Desiah Lea Corp from Schenectady, was critically injured and is receiving treatment at the same medical center.

The Times Union reported that the crash prompted a significant emergency response, including the Bloomington Fire Department and multiple EMS units. The northbound lanes were closed for several hours for accident reconstruction.

State Police are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information or dash-cam footage to contact them at 845-344-5300. The Thruway Authority reminds drivers that U-turns are prohibited except for authorized vehicles.
