A new law sponsored by State Senator Michelle Hinchey has been signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, expanding access to mental health courts in New York. The legislation allows individuals with mental illnesses who have been arrested to have their cases heard in a mental health court in a neighboring county if their own county lacks such a court.
Senator Hinchey, who represents the 41st Senate District, collaborated with Assemblymember John McDonald and received support from various district attorneys and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The bill aims to create a more equitable justice system by providing better access to mental health resources for those in need.
According to a press release from the New York State Senate, the legislation was advocated by district attorneys from Albany, Ulster, and Columbia counties, as well as other legislators. Hinchey emphasized that this measure is a significant step forward for mental health care in the state.
The signing of the bill marks a collaborative effort to address the needs of individuals with mental health challenges within the criminal justice system. It reflects ongoing efforts to improve mental health care and support across New York.
