Memorial services for Michael Joseph Ryan, a dedicated firefighter and Fire District Commissioner in Phoenicia begin today (December 19). Calling hours will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home on Main Street. A funeral mass is scheduled for noon tomorrow at Saint Francis de Sales Church.

Michael Ryan, born on March 22, 1964, in Brooklyn passed away last Saturday (December 13) after suffering a medical emergency while responding to a rescue operation for an injured hiker in Shandaken. Ryan's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to service and bravery. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1983 and served with distinction, earning accolades such as the Iraq Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. After his military career, he continued to serve in the New York Air National Guard at Stewart Air Force Base.

Ryan was also a respected member of the Kingston Police Department for 25 years, known for his leadership and professionalism. Even after his retirement in 2021, he continued to instruct recruits at the Police Academy and served as Fire Commissioner with the M.F. Whitney Hose Co. State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Amanda Lefton described Ryan as "a proven hero," acknowledging his leadership and dedication to his community.

Ryan is survived by his wife of 25 years, Debra Jo, his mother, Finola Ryan, and his siblings. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the M.F. Whitney Hose Co. His legacy of heroism and selflessness will be remembered by his family, friends, and the community he served.
