Kingston native Zack Short has signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees, aiming to secure a spot on the major league roster during spring training. The 30-year-old infielder, who graduated from Kingston High School in 2013, will bring his experience to the Yankees as they face uncertainty at the shortstop position due to Anthony Volpe's injury.
Short's journey in Major League Baseball (MLB) began when he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2021 and has since played for the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, and Houston Astros. In his career, Short has appeared in 248 MLB games, maintaining a batting average of .172 with 15 home runs. His versatility allows him to play second base, third base, and shortstop, making him a valuable asset for the Yankees.
The Yankees signed Short as they prepare for the 2026 season, where they will be without shortstop Anthony Volpe due to his recovery from labrum surgery. José Caballero is expected to cover most of the shortstop duties, but Short offers additional depth and experience. Short expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Yankees, stating, "I'm very excited for another opportunity, especially for a team like the Yankees" as reported by Mid Hudson News.
Short's signing is part of a series of moves by the Yankees and Mets, highlighting the ongoing player exchanges between the two New York teams. As the Yankees look to strengthen their roster, Short's presence could provide the infield stability they need during Volpe's absence.
