Congressman Pat Ryan of New York's 18th district criticized Republican leaders for not extending healthcare benefits beyond January 1. Ryan blames House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Trump for the lapse, which could lead to increased insurance costs for many families. According to Mid Hudson News, Ryan's survey revealed that 77% of Hudson Valley families received notices of rising insurance premiums, with many facing a doubling of their bills.

Ryan's survey also highlighted the impact of cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which have left 17,000 Hudson Valley residents without coverage. He emphasized the urgent need for action, stating, "We need all-hands-on-deck to fight Trump’s price hikes and extend these life-saving tax credits."

The issue has sparked a political standoff in Washington, with moderate Republicans joining Democrats to force a vote on extending ACA tax credits. However, the GOP's proposed healthcare bill, which does not include these credits, faces an uncertain future in the Senate. The situation remains tense as the January deadline approaches, with potential consequences for millions of Americans.
