Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation reports a significant increase in enrollment for its low-income discount payment plans. As of October, over 13,000 customers have signed up, marking a rise of more than 3,000 from the previous year. The majority of these customers are part of the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which provides federally funded support to help income-qualified households manage heating costs during the colder months.

HEAP benefits vary based on factors such as income, household size, and heating source. For instance, households of four heating with natural gas and earning up to $80,160 annually are eligible for a $400 grant. According to Central Hudson's Chief Customer Services Officer, Lauren Preston, "Enrolling in HEAP is one of the most important steps customers can take to ensure they stay safe and comfortable during the winter months" (Central Hudson).

In addition to HEAP, Central Hudson offers other assistance programs, such as the Energy Affordability Program, which provides monthly bill credits, and The Good Neighbor Fund, offering grants up to $650. Flexible payment options, including budget billing and deferred payment agreements, are also available to help customers manage costs (Daily Freeman).

The increase in program enrollment comes amid rising energy costs due to colder-than-average temperatures in the Northeast. Central Hudson purchases energy from open markets, where prices fluctuate, affecting customer bills. The utility encourages customers to conserve energy and take advantage of available programs to manage expenses.
