The flu is spreading rapidly across the Mid Hudson Valley, with Westchester County leading in infections. For the week ending December 20, Westchester reported 5,409 cases, followed by Orange County with 1,919, and Dutchess County with 1,267. Statewide, nearly 190,000 flu cases have been confirmed since October, marking a severe flu season in New York.

According to the Mid Hudson News, New York recently broke its record for flu cases in a single week, with 71,123 cases reported. This surge represents a 38 percent increase from the previous week. Flu hospitalizations also rose by 63 percent, totaling 3,666. Dr. James McDonald, the State Health Commissioner, emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, "While influenza activity is elevated, there are simple steps New Yorkers can take to protect themselves and those around them, including getting vaccinated."

The New York State Department of Health has declared influenza prevalent and urges residents to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is available at pharmacies and doctor's offices, offering the best defense against infection. Emergency One Urgent Care provides flu shots, rapid testing, and evaluations without appointments for those experiencing symptoms.

The flu season arrived earlier than expected, with a reported 75 percent increase in flu hospitalizations recently. As flu cases continue to rise, residents are encouraged to take precautions, including getting vaccinated, staying home when sick, and practicing preventive measures. The flu season typically runs until late April or early May, so it is not too late to get vaccinated.
