Local lawmakers are reacting to Governor Kathy Hochul's recent State of the State address in Albany. The governor outlined several proposals aimed at making life more affordable for New Yorkers. Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha, a Democrat, expressed support for the governor's broad ideas, noting they will help shape upcoming state budget discussions. Shrestha, who was elected with backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, believes the proposals are a step in the right direction for New York.

However, not all lawmakers share this optimism. Republican Assemblyman Brian Maher criticized the governor's address, arguing that it lacks the deep changes needed by families. Maher emphasized the need for substantial reforms rather than rhetoric.

The address comes amid a backdrop of political shifts in New York, with several new lawmakers taking office following the recent elections. According to City & State, Democrats maintained majority control of both legislative chambers, despite Republican efforts to gain ground. New lawmakers, including Shrestha, are preparing to tackle policy issues in the upcoming legislative session.

As the state gears up for budget talks, the governor's proposals will likely be a focal point of debate among lawmakers from both parties.
