The Hudson Valley region is seeing a decrease in flu cases, providing a welcome break from the recent surge. For the week ending January 10, Westchester County reported the highest number of infections with 1,238 cases, followed by Orange County with 619, and Rockland County with 399. Despite the decline, health experts urge residents to remain vigilant and continue preventive measures such as practicing good hygiene and getting vaccinated.
Earlier, Westchester County had reported 3,026 cases for the week ending December 27, highlighting the region's fluctuating flu activity. The New York State Department of Health has declared influenza prevalent, emphasizing the importance of vaccination. Dr. James McDonald, the State Health Commissioner, stressed that while flu activity remains high, vaccination is crucial for protection.
The flu season typically peaks in January and can last until late April or early May. The Department of Health has reported a record number of flu hospitalizations, with 4,546 hospitalizations recorded recently. To combat the flu, antiviral medications can be prescribed if administered within 48 hours of symptom onset.
As flu cases fluctuate, health officials continue to advocate for vaccination and preventive measures to safeguard against the virus. The flu vaccine is widely available at pharmacies and doctor's offices across the state.
