The town of Athens has officially implemented a new noise ordinance aimed at preserving residents' health and well-being by restricting loud noises during nighttime hours.

The Greene County community's newly approved measure prohibits "disturbing, excessive or offensive noise" between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., according to the town's municipal code. Violators will face a $200 fine for breaking the rules.

This type of regulation is common in municipalities across New York State, with many communities establishing similar quiet hours to balance quality of life concerns with normal community activities. The Athens ordinance follows patterns seen in New York City's noise code, which also restricts certain noise-producing activities during overnight hours.

Local officials believe the new rules will help address complaints from residents about sleep disruption and other negative impacts from late-night noise. The ordinance is now officially on the books and enforcement has begun.

The law is part of a broader effort by the town to update its municipal regulations. Residents with questions about specific provisions or enforcement can contact the town offices for clarification on what constitutes a violation.
