A 16-year-old male is facing serious charges following a September crash in Coxsackie that left him and four other juveniles injured.

New York State Police arrested the teenager on Thursday (January 23) in connection with the accident that occurred on State Route 81. He has been charged with both felony and misdemeanor offenses related to vehicular assault and was released on his own recognizance, according to authorities.

The crash happened when the teen, who was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu westbound with four juvenile passengers, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and struck a rock embankment. Emergency responders described the scene as a "tough situation to mitigate," requiring multiple ambulance and rescue squads as well as Life Net helicopter service.

All five occupants sustained varying injuries and were transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment. At the time of the incident, all were reported to be in stable condition.

According to The Daily Freeman, the driver was unlicensed at the time of the crash, which likely contributed to the charges now being brought against him.

The case will proceed through the juvenile justice system, though specific court dates have not been announced.
