A 24-year-old Cairo man is being held without bail after allegedly causing serious injuries to a three-year-old girl who remains in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials responded to a residence on Main Street in Cairo on Wednesday (January 29) around 4 p.m. following reports of an unconscious child. Upon arrival, officers discovered the toddler with multiple severe injuries, according to NEWS10.

The child was initially treated at the scene by Town of Cairo and Town of Durham ambulance personnel along with Greene County Medics before being airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition as of Thursday.

Following an investigation, authorities determined that Lameik Wilson had allegedly intentionally harmed the child. Wilson has been charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, the Daily Freeman reports.

After his arraignment, Wilson was remanded to the Greene County Jail without bail.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office, which is leading the investigation, received assistance from the Greene County District Attorney's Office and the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit. CBS6 Albany reports that authorities are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the Greene County Sheriff's Office at 518-943-3300.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to gather evidence and information about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
