A woman was assaulted at Tulum Mexican Restaurant on Lake Street in Newburgh on Sunday evening, resulting in lacerations to her leg and arm, according to first responders at the scene.

The victim was transported to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital for treatment following the incident, which occurred around 6 p.m. on Sunday (February 2).

Details remain limited as authorities continue their investigation. It's currently unclear whether the assault took place inside or outside the restaurant. During the incident, a front window of the establishment was smashed, and employees were seen covering it up when emergency personnel arrived.

The Newburgh City Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from New York State Police, who were also present at the scene. As of Monday morning, authorities have not released information about potential suspects or whether anyone has been charged in connection with the assault.

Restaurant management declined to comment on the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

This incident comes amid increased police presence in downtown Newburgh following several recent disturbances at local businesses. City officials have scheduled a community meeting later this week to address public safety concerns in the area.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Newburgh City Police Department at 845-561-3131.
