The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District has appointed Dr. Patrick Darfler-Sweeney as interim superintendent following the upcoming retirement of longtime leader Randall Squier, who will step down this Friday (February 7).

Darfler-Sweeney, who previously served as superintendent of the Hunter-Tannersville district and has experience as an interim superintendent throughout the region, will begin his role this month, according to a district announcement.

Squier's departure comes earlier than initially planned. While he had announced early last year that he would retire at the end of his contract, he later decided to leave the position several months ahead of schedule after nearly 15 years of leadership.

"This decision comes after much reflection and with deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve our students, staff, and community since August 2011," Squier previously stated about his retirement.

The district has already launched its search for a permanent superintendent, beginning with a community survey that asked residents to identify essential professional and personal attributes needed in their next leader. The survey also sought input on what community members believe the district needs to continue growing.

Darfler-Sweeney is expected to remain in the interim position until the superintendent search process is completed. District officials have committed to providing regular updates throughout the search process, with details to be posted on the district website.
