A Greene County man convicted of murder will learn his fate today as he faces sentencing for the 2021 killing of Adam White in Catskill.
Jeffrey Field, 37, of Round Top, was found guilty in November of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and second-degree assault after a jury deliberation that lasted less than four days following a week-long trial. The sentencing, originally scheduled for January 23, was rescheduled to Monday, February 9, due to a scheduling conflict with Greene County Supreme Court Judge Meagan Galligan.
Field was convicted for the fatal stabbing of Adam White and the serious injury of Christopher Gere on August 22, 2021, on Summit Avenue in Catskill. An autopsy revealed that White died after his heart and spleen were penetrated during the stabbing attack.
Greene County District Attorney Joseph Stanzione is seeking the maximum prison sentence of 25 years to life, stating that Field showed "absolutely no remorse" for his actions.
"This particular case is a rather vicious attack on innocent individuals," Stanzione said. "If you viciously attack one person, causing death, and run up to another and stab him in the back, so there is murder and attempted murder, it's way over the top," he told reporters on Friday.
The Greene County Probation Department has prepared a presentence investigation report that provides a detailed analysis of Field's background to guide the court in determining an appropriate sentence. This report will be considered by both the prosecution and defense as they make their arguments to Judge Galligan.
Field's alleged accomplice, Michael White, is also scheduled to appear before Judge Galligan immediately after Field's hearing. According to court records, Michael White's calendar section is listed as a "plea." White, who was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, and tampering with evidence, testified against Field during the trial.
The district attorney noted that Michael White's cooperation helped the prosecution make its case against Field. Following Field's sentencing, Stanzione will have a conference with Judge Galligan to discuss Michael White's case.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that has been ongoing since the 2021 murder that shocked the small community of Catskill.
