Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed New York State Senator Peter Oberacker in his bid to represent New York's 19th Congressional District, setting the stage for what could be one of the most closely watched races in the 2026 midterm elections.

In a post on his Truth Social platform last week, President Trump gave his "complete and total endorsement" to Oberacker, describing him as "an incredible candidate" who would fight for the values of Central New York residents. The endorsement praised Oberacker's background as a "very successful 'Meat Market' businessman" and his record of public service.

"As your next Congressman, he will fight tirelessly to grow the economy, cut taxes and regulations, unleash American energy dominance, keep our border secure, stop migrant crime, ensure law and order, strengthen our brave military/veterans, advance election integrity, and protect our always under siege Second Amendment," Trump wrote.

The former president didn't limit his comments to supporting Oberacker. He also took aim at incumbent Democratic Congressman **Josh Riley**, calling him a "Radical Left Extremist" who doesn't represent the district's values. Trump claimed Riley supports open borders, defunding the police, and wants to take away Second Amendment rights, among other accusations.

When asked for comment, Riley's office referred to his social media response, where he posted: "Why did he put 'Meat Market' in quotes?" Riley later added in a statement: "I don't care what Trump has to say about this race. I care about what Upstate New Yorkers say about their day-to-day lives. They want lower utility bills, safe communities, and accessible rural healthcare, and I'm fighting every day to deliver."

Oberacker, who currently represents the 51st state Senate District, quickly thanked Trump for the endorsement. "I spoke with President Trump last night and thanked him for his complete and total endorsement," Oberacker said. "Now more than ever, Upstate New York needs a representative who will fight to defend our values."

The race has gained additional national attention with House Speaker Mike Johnson also endorsing Oberacker the same day as Trump's announcement. Johnson stated that Oberacker "will help us continue to deliver safe streets, secure borders, lower costs, a strong economy, and peace through strength."

The 19th Congressional District includes parts of Ulster County and stretches from the Ithaca area to the Massachusetts border. Political analysts expect this contest to be among the most competitive House races in the upcoming midterm elections.
