Columbia County Democrats have endorsed the re-election campaign of Didi Barrett, who is seeking her sixth term representing the 106th Assembly District. Barrett, who has served since 2013, received support from 54 fellow Democrats as she prepares for a primary challenge from former Columbia County Democratic Committee Chair Sam Hodge on Tuesday (June 23).

Barrett, who was the first Democrat elected to represent Columbia County since President Martin Van Buren, is focusing her campaign on continuing her work on local projects like the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, universal child care, and energy affordability. She emphasized her commitment to her constituents, saying, "I love my job, and it's been the greatest honor to represent the 106th Assembly District."

Hodge, who plans to challenge Barrett from the left, criticized her acceptance of contributions from political action committees tied to energy companies. He argues that Barrett's acceptance of these funds is a conflict of interest, given her role as chair of the Assembly’s Energy Committee. Hodge also plans to address issues like immigration and healthcare in his campaign.

The primary will determine who advances to the general election in November. Barrett has previously faced primary challenges, most notably in 2024, when she narrowly defeated Claire Cousin in Dutchess County while winning decisively in Columbia County.

As the race unfolds, both candidates are expected to focus on key issues affecting the district, including energy policy, healthcare, and local economic development. The outcome of the primary could signal the direction of the Democratic Party in the region.
