An inmate at Greenhaven Correctional Facility in Beekman has been indicted on charges of aggravated assault for allegedly throwing urine at two prison employees. Cain Carothers, 25, faces two felony counts for the incident, which involved a nurse and a corrections officer. The Dutchess County District Attorney's Office announced the indictment on Thursday, February 26.
The alleged assault occurred on the morning of March 20, 2025, within the state prison. According to the district attorney's office, Carothers threw urine at the nurse and officer, and the liquid made contact with both employees. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Unit Chief Michael Viviano and Senior Assistant District Attorney Joseph Russo, with Judge Karen Edelman-Reyes presiding.
Carothers was arraigned on Wednesday, February 25, and has been remanded without bail. He is scheduled to return to court on April 1. The New York State Police conducted the investigation into the incident.
According to Daily Voice, the charges against Carothers are part of broader efforts to address assaults on prison staff. Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi emphasized the importance of maintaining safety for corrections officers, stating that assaults on officers undermine the rule of law and safety within correctional facilities.
