Starting Sunday (March 1), residents of the Hudson Valley who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will face new work requirements. These changes affect able-bodied adults aged 18 to 64 without dependents under 14. According to NEWS10, they must work, volunteer, or participate in job training for at least 20 hours a week or 80 hours a month to maintain their benefits.

The new rules, part of the "Big Beautiful Bill" signed by President Donald Trump in July 2025, extend the age range for work requirements from 54 to 64. The legislation also redefines a dependent child as 13 or younger. Those unable to meet these requirements may only receive benefits for three months within a three-year period.

The changes aim to reduce the number of SNAP recipients by about 2.4 million people over the next decade. FOX 5 NY reports that local Departments of Social Services will begin notifying affected individuals. Exemptions may apply, and recipients are encouraged to contact their caseworkers to document any applicable exemptions.

Barbara Guinn, commissioner for the state's office distributing food stamps, noted that activities beyond traditional employment, such as community volunteering, can satisfy the work requirement. According to WSYR, individuals who consistently report earnings may already meet the requirements without additional paperwork.
