Residents in the Hudson Valley region, including Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties, are facing significant challenges in paying their utility bills, according to a recent report by the Benjamin Center at SUNY New Paltz. The study reveals that one in 10 households has experienced utility service termination due to unpaid bills, with Sullivan County having the highest disconnection rate at 15%.

The report highlights that 25% of households in Ulster County and 35% in Sullivan County carry utility debt. Overall, one in four households in the region struggles with utility costs, leading to cutbacks in non-essential spending. According to Kathleen Tobin, Ph.D., a sociologist and Benjamin Center Scholar, 88% of affected households have reduced non-essential spending, and 74% have cut back on travel or vacations.

The financial strain extends beyond utility bills. Seven in 10 households also struggle to pay rent or mortgage on time, and many report poor physical or mental health. Non-white households are more likely to face utility payment issues, with 41% affected compared to 20% of white households. Renters are also more vulnerable, with 38% experiencing negative utility cost consequences compared to 20% of homeowners.

Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. acknowledges the challenges and offers financial assistance programs. Joseph Jenkins, a company spokesman, stated, "We are committed to providing a wide range of programs and financial assistance for households that are struggling."

The report underscores the urgent need for collaborative efforts with policymakers to address energy affordability. The full report is available at bit.ly/bc-utility26.
