Fleeing Youth Who Tosses Gun Apprehended

A youth was taken into custody by Newburgh City Police following a foot chase after officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Monday, February 19. The incident occurred when the underage individual, whose name was withheld due to age, fled the scene along with another person. During the pursuit, the youth discarded a loaded, stolen firearm, according to Newburgh City Police.

Authorities said the youth was apprehended shortly after fleeing and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property. The firearm was recovered by officers at the scene. The police did not release further details about the circumstances leading up to the stop or the identity of the second individual involved.

The Newburgh City Police Department continues to investigate the February 19 incident. There is no word yet on court dates or additional charges. Officers have reminded the public about the risks of unsecured firearms and the importance of responsible gun ownership.
