Columbia-Greene Community College has announced a new Prison Education Program at Hudson Correctional Facility in Hudson. This initiative offers incarcerated individuals the chance to earn an associate degree through in-person and hybrid instruction models. The program is a collaboration between the college and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).
According to NEWS10 ABC, the program aims to provide education that fosters opportunity, accountability, and personal growth. DOCCS Commissioner Daniel F. Martuscello III stated, "Education has the power to change lives... This benefits not only the individuals in the program, but the communities they will return to."
The program offers comprehensive support, including assistance with admissions, financial aid, and academic advising. Career coaching will also be available to prepare students for employment post-release, with services such as resume writing and interview skills training.
As reported by The Daily Gazette, SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. emphasized the program's alignment with SUNY's mission to expand higher education access. "By strengthening continuity for justice-impacted students, we are not only expanding opportunity but also investing in safer communities, workforce development, and a more equitable future," he said.
Graduates can continue their studies at Columbia-Greene's main campus or transfer to other institutions. This program marks Columbia-Greene's third partnership with a correctional facility, following similar initiatives at Green Haven and Greene Correctional Facilities.
