The Cairo-Durham Central School District has appointed Dr. Dotan Schips as its new superintendent, effective July 1. Schips, currently the deputy superintendent, will succeed Michael Wetherbee, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Schips has been with the district for seven years, previously serving as middle school principal and assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Schips holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Russell Sage College, a Master of Science in Education from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Albany. He is certified as a school district and building leader, as well as a secondary education teacher. Before joining Cairo-Durham, Schips was a principal at Warren Street Academy and an English language arts teacher at New Lebanon Jr./Sr. High School.

Board Vice President Brian Coletti praised Schips' track record, stating, "He has a proven track record of fostering teacher-led initiatives, improving curriculum, and supporting classroom needs." Coletti emphasized Schips' deep understanding of the district's goals and community, ensuring a smooth transition.

Wetherbee, who has served as superintendent since 2019, expressed pride in the district's achievements, including significant improvements in student test scores. Under his leadership, the district's students surpassed state and regional averages in recent assessments.

Schips expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, "I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such talented educators and a supportive Board of Education in service of our outstanding students." His appointment runs through June 30, 2030.
