In a recent court decision, Dave Fulford, a 20-year-old resident of Newburgh, was sentenced to eight years in prison for his involvement in a violent slashing incident. The sentencing took place following Fulford's guilty plea to attempted assault in the first degree, as announced by Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.

The incident occurred on September 3, 2025, when Fulford attacked a man from behind on Van Ness Street in Newburgh, using a sharp object to slash the victim's face. The victim suffered a significant laceration requiring stitches. Fulford later admitted to the police that he had intended to cause serious physical harm with a dangerous instrument.

District Attorney Hoovler praised the City of Newburgh Police Department for their thorough investigation, which led to Fulford's arrest and subsequent conviction. "This defendant’s admitted conduct is unspeakably violent," Hoovler stated, emphasizing the importance of addressing such acts of violence to maintain community safety.

Fulford's sentence includes five years of post-release supervision, highlighting the seriousness of the crime and its impact on the victim and the community. The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Kelle Grimmer.

This sentencing marks a significant step in addressing violent crimes in Newburgh, as law enforcement continues to work diligently to ensure justice and safety for all residents.
