Police increased their presence at the Galleria at Crystal Run in the Town of Wallkill on Sunday (March 22) after social media posts falsely claimed that teens would stage a mass “takeover” of the shopping center. The mall, which has a policy requiring minors to be accompanied by an adult, turned away several unsupervised youths as a precaution.

Law enforcement responded after reports of similar incidents elsewhere in New York and neighboring states. According to Westchester County police, officers have been monitoring social media for plans about so-called “teen takeovers.” Recent events, like the gathering at Bay Plaza in the Bronx, have resulted in arrests and injuries, prompting officials to act quickly to prevent further disruptions.

The “takeover” trend involves large groups of teens organizing through social media to gather in public spaces, sometimes resulting in property damage and safety concerns. As reported by local law enforcement, these gatherings have caused disturbances, and police are urging teens and parents to avoid participating in such events.

Police in Massachusetts and other areas are also preparing for potential copycat incidents after online rumors surface, often requiring significant resources to manage even when the threats turn out to be false. According to MassLive, authorities must treat each social media post as credible until proven otherwise, citing public safety as their top concern.

Officials encourage anyone with information about planned gatherings to contact law enforcement through tip lines or mobile apps. The Galleria at Crystal Run and other malls continue to enforce rules to maintain a safe environment for all visitors. No arrests or injuries were reported in Wallkill, and the mall operated normally following the increased police presence.
