Nassau County Executive and New York gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman has voiced strong opposition to the Shepherd's Run Solar Project in Copake. During a visit to the area on Tuesday (April 7), Blakeman criticized the proposal, labeling it a threat to public safety, agriculture, and common sense. He expressed concerns that the project could pose an industrial fire hazard near a school and compromise a primary drinking water source.
The Shepherd's Run Solar Project aims to provide clean and affordable energy while boosting local economies. However, Blakeman argues that the project's potential risks outweigh its benefits. He stated, "This project is a direct assault on our communities' safety and well-being."
Blakeman's criticism aligns with his broader stance against certain renewable energy initiatives. He has previously criticized Governor Kathy Hochul's energy policies, including her support for lithium-ion battery storage sites, which he claims pose significant fire hazards. According to the New York Post, Blakeman has called for a statewide ban on these battery farms, citing their potential to release toxic chemicals and challenge emergency response efforts.
As Blakeman continues his gubernatorial campaign, his stance on energy projects like Shepherd's Run is likely to remain a focal point of his platform. The project, meanwhile, aims to proceed with its goal of delivering sustainable energy solutions to New York communities.
