A miniature horse named Teddy is recovering after being struck by a train near Catskill early Wednesday morning (April 8). The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on train tracks just south of Catskill. Greene County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the horse on the tracks and quickly contacted Unbridled Sanctuary for assistance.
Teddy suffered a severe laceration on his left hindquarters and sustained fractures to a rib and vertebra. Despite the serious injuries, Susan Kayne, founder of Unbridled Sanctuary, expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, "The injuries are pretty extensive, but he can certainly recover from them with the right care."
Teddy was transported to Rhinebeck Equine Center, where he is expected to remain hospitalized for several weeks. His treatment will continue at Unbridled Sanctuary once he is discharged. The cost of Teddy's care is estimated at $7,500, and the sanctuary has started a fundraiser to help cover the expenses.
The circumstances leading to Teddy's presence on the tracks remain unclear. Authorities have located his owner, who voluntarily relinquished Teddy to Unbridled Sanctuary to ensure he receives the necessary treatment. A second miniature horse named Duke, believed to have escaped with Teddy, is still missing.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Rhinebeck Equine Hospital, and Unbridled Sanctuary worked together to save Teddy. Kayne praised the efforts of law enforcement, saying, "It was a Herculean effort on their part." The investigation into how Teddy ended up on the tracks is ongoing.
