For the first time in over six years, New Windsor is grappling with a homicide investigation. On Wednesday (April 8), officers responded to a shooting on Hawthorne Way, near Stewart International Airport, after reports of gunfire. They found a man with multiple gunshot wounds, who was later pronounced dead at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute between neighbors in The Grove, a townhouse complex. Police detained another man at the scene, but details of any arrest have not been released.

New Windsor Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti described the shooting as a "heartbreaking tragedy" and emphasized the need for community vigilance. "While this appears to be an isolated incident, it is a sobering reminder of how quickly disputes can escalate," Bedetti said.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification. The investigation is ongoing, with assistance from New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the New Windsor Police Department Detective Bureau at 845-565-7000.
