The Columbia County Sheriff's Office reports that two survivors of a devastating car crash in Claverack, New York, are showing signs of improvement. The head-on collision occurred on Monday night (April 6) on Route 9H, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals. Among the survivors, a one-year-old girl and her mother, Fatima Akter, remain in critical condition at Albany Medical Center, though their conditions are stabilizing. Sheriff Jackie Salvatore mentioned that there is hope for Akter to be moved out of intensive care soon.
The accident involved a 2009 Toyota Prius, driven by Nazmul Robel, 29, of Loudonville, who crossed into the southbound lane for unknown reasons, colliding with a 2025 Toyota Crown. Robel and two passengers, Mohammed Heramon, 60, and Fahim Halim, 25, both from the Bronx, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Prius also carried Akter and her daughter, who were critically injured. The Toyota Crown's driver, Luke Palvenian, 24, of Brooklyn, was treated and released, while his passenger, Julia Ritchie, 62, of Stockport, was also killed.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and urge witnesses to come forward. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Halim's family, as he was the sole provider for his loved ones.
Sheriff Salvatore described the scene as "horrific," with multiple rescue agencies responding to the emergency. The crash remains under investigation, and Route 9H was closed for several hours following the incident.
