Jury selection is resuming today (April 10) in the trial of Cristobal Orlando Ascencio-Chacon, a Hudson man accused of sexually abusing several young children. Ascencio-Chacon, 34, faces multiple charges, including first-degree sexual abuse and predatory sexual assault against a child. If convicted, he could face decades in prison.
The case stems from a Hudson Police investigation that began on September 7, 2024, after a reported domestic incident. Authorities allege that Ascencio-Chacon abused children under seven years old. The investigation involved collaboration with the Columbia County Department of Social Services and Child Protective Services. Following the investigation, Ascencio-Chacon was arrested on October 23, 2024, by both Hudson and New York State Police.
As of today, only four of the 15 required jurors have been seated, with the jury consisting of 12 jurors and three alternates. The trial, overseen by Judge Richard Rivera in Columbia County Court, is expected to continue into next week.
Hudson Police Chief Mishanda Franklin expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts in the investigation, emphasizing the department's commitment to victim safety and child protection. The trial is anticipated to face challenges due to the serious nature of the charges, and jury selection is a critical step in the proceedings.
