A Republican candidate has entered the race for New York's 18th Congressional District, challenging incumbent Rep. Pat Ryan. Jackie Mary Auringer, a 29-year-old businesswoman from Kingston, filed her candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday (April 8). Auringer, who works as a project manager and accountant at her family's construction business, Urban Precast, aims to address issues she perceives in her community.
Auringer expressed concerns about the affordability and sustainability of living in the Hudson Valley, stating, "The results speak for themselves—Pat Ryan has failed the Hudson Valley." She emphasized her experience in construction as a tool to "cut through the noise and get results."
Auringer has built a network of donors and activists through her involvement with Palm Beach Conservatives and the Palm Beach Federated Republican Women, which she believes will bolster her campaign. She is set to officially accept the Republican nomination on Monday (April 13).
Rep. Pat Ryan, a Democrat from Gardiner, has held the seat since 2022. A West Point graduate and Army veteran, Ryan has previously served as Ulster County executive. He is known for his criticism of President Donald Trump and has a campaign fund of $2.5 million, according to the Federal Election Commission. Ryan's district includes parts of Ulster County, all of Orange County, and most of Dutchess County.
The Cook Political Report rates the 18th District as "solid Democrat," suggesting Ryan is favored to win. However, Auringer's entry into the race adds a new dynamic as she seeks to unseat the incumbent. The primary election is scheduled for June 23, 2026.
